Question: I understand that the first step to create a web site is to have a name for the site. I have several names in my mind. But I do not know where to register the names. I have been told that the registered domain names can be a gold mine, by selling the domain names. But who is the authority which registers the domain names? How much it costs to register a domain name?
Answer: From your registering a domain query above, why not try Godaddy. They give free hosting with every domain registration.

The prices of the domain name would depend on which registrar you choose to register your domain.
Some of them are:
yahoo.com
godaddy.com
enom.com
namecheap.com
Cheapest is netfirms.com
When registering a domain name you must also look at hosting facilities in case you want to use the names in the future for your own purpose, and its best to do it in bulk. What I have done with http://www.4clickdesigns.com is got a hosting package that allowed me to have multiple domain names, I think that is what you are looking for. Have fun
I registered my domain name by GoDaddy.com, it cost me less than 10$ but i register it for 2 years for only 18$
but i host my website at, Siteground.com they got a great hosting package plan. but they charge 14$ for domain registration. Not sure if they charge less in 2 years.

You can actually go to several places. One of the most popular on the internet right now is godaddy.com. You have a variety of options at that site as well. My source has a link to it.
www.dot.tk -its free
www.godaddy.com
www.freewebs.com -its free
www.homestead.com
I use fxdomains for purchasing all of my domains. Some domains can be sold for a substantial amount if you can find a good one and sit on it for a while. The name will be registered in your name and you are free to transfer or sell it. It costs about $7.75 to register a domain.
Yahoo has a name registry facility somewhere on its site, but I don’t know just where; hunt around. You can Google "domain name registration" for more info.
bugdobiz.com – webhosting and a domain for free!
You can register it at namecheap.com
it costs you $8.88
only .01% domain registered will ever make profit from selling
